There are around 42 volcanos in Nicaragua, depending on who you ask.

Some active, some no longer active. Some of our favourite Volcanos include Telica, Cerro Negro, Mombacho, Cosiguina, Maderas, El Hoyo, and Masaya. Each one is different from the other, and each one offers something truly unique.

Volcano Telica (my favourite). One of the most active volcanoes in Nicaragua, located in the department of Leon, and Telica municipality. The last eruption was in 2020, however we have been lucky enough to see real activity while on this volcano. Luckily enough as well to see the glow of the magma at the perfect time!

Telica offers an-one in a lifetime opportunity to camp on a volcano. An active volcano at that! We have hiked Telica more times than we can count, and never get tired of it. We take groups up the volcano which itself is pretty bare due to the eruptions, however the views on the way up are incredible, you can see surrounding volcanos such as El Hoyo, San Cristobal, Santa Clara and more. When at the top of the volcano, you will quickly notice Telica is always smoking! The air becomes sulfury and if you too are lucky enough you can see the glow of the magma in the crater.

Enjoy the sunset at the top of Volcano Telica, and begin your hike to the side of the volcanos where you will see your tents have been set up for you. Here you will have your dinner prepared for you by a local family who lives on the volcano. Have a bonfire while star gazing at the open unpolluted sky.

Watch as the volcano may or may not have some activity involving little puffs of smoke erupting above. When you need to go to the bathroom, you will truly become one with nature - as you do your business outside but looking up to a beautiful view.

In the morning you may wake to the sound of wild horses and cows outside of your tent - completely harmless but interested in what you’re doing. Come out of your tent to the smell of a fresh breakfast and coffee waiting for you also made by that same local family.

Soon you will begin your hike down the volcano, and your ride will be waiting for you, but you’ll never forget that time you slept on an active volcano.

Not only is this tour such an incredible opportunity but I truly love it even extra because of the good it does too, when you travel with us you are supporting the driver who takes you to and from the volcano, the family who makes your meals, the family who sets up your camp, and everyone in between.
